The Bigger Person

It is an honor for a man to keep away from strife [by handling situations with thoughtful foresight], But any fool will [start a] quarrel [without regard for the consequences].
— Proverbs 20:3 (AMP)

It’s funny how words have an impact on our lives and can last what seems to be an eternity. Whispering of the words “I love you” from the bedside of a sick loved one can massage your heart, while the adolescent scream of “I hate you” from your grounded child can massacre the same heart. There have been many times in heated discussions with family and friends that I said something I wish I hadn’t. Though I may have offered a sincere apology, the sting from my choice of words still remain.

You have the God given ability to change any negative situation into a positive. You do this when you decide to use words that build up a person instead of tear them down. When you avoid strife, you’re actually honoring God. When conflicts arise, become the bigger person by addressing the situation using positive words to produce solutions and correct, not negative words that highlight the wrong and ultimately destroy bonds. Take a deep breath. Think. Practice taking time in choosing the right words before responding in a situation. Your relationship is worth it.

Watch your mouth

Lord, thank You for giving me the power to heal others through my use of words. I will honor You by avoiding strife and handling situations with thoughtful foresight. I value the relationship I have with the family and friends You’ve given me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
— This is my prayer
