Fence All Around

‘Does Job fear God for nothing?’ Satan replied. ‘Have you not put a hedge around him and his household and everything he has? You have blessed the work of his hands, so that his flocks and herds are spread throughout the land.’
— JOB 1:9, 10 (NIV)

In the 1992 movie, “The Hand That Rocks the Cradle,” Ernie Hudson plays Solomon, a handyman with an intellectual disability. The work program he was part of assigned him to work for a family that needed things fixed around their home. One project was a fence. When the homeowners asked him to build a fence, he asked, “Do you want the fence to keep people out or to keep people in?” I recall laughing when he said that line. I thought it was crazy talk. But now I realize it wasn’t crazy at all.

The fence (or hedge) that God has around you isn’t to keep you from getting out. It’s to protect you and give you freedom to stretch out in the area Christ has provided for you. When people build fences in their backyards, it’s to protect their loved ones or pets from harm. The fence all around you keeps the enemy out. You have nothing to fear. You are protected, your family is protected, your possessions are protected, your mind is protected, your spirit, your heart and your soul. You have a hedge all around you today because God loves you and wants to protect you from the enemy.

You’re safe
