Above All Things

Dear children, keep yourselves from idols.
— 1 JOHN 5:21 (NIV)

Life can be filled with plenty of things to love or like a lot. You can love your spouse or best friend. You can love your job or car you’ve always wanted. You can love your house or a sunny vacation spot. You can love your favorite dish or childhood song. And while it’s OK to really like these things, GOD doesn’t want you to love anything more than you love Him.

If you’re not careful, the things you like a lot can become idols. Sometimes it happens without you even noticing. A good rule for defining a potential idol in your life is anything you spend more time with (e.g. learning, studying, doing for, etc.) than GOD. Anything or anyone like that in your life? Another rule of thumb is never love anything that can’t love you back. When you decide to love GOD first, you enable Him to fill your life with unmeasurable good things to enjoy. And I’m not saying you’re not doing it, but this is just a reminder to put GOD above all things and keep yourself from idols of any kind.

Seek Him first…

Heavenly Father, I love You, Lord. I have no other GOD before You. I will keep myself away from idols and put You first above all things. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.
