Uproot Bitterness

See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.
— HEBREWS 15:12 (NIV)

Do you know of anyone who seems to be always in a bad mood? No matter the time of day or what’s going on, they just always seem to be negative, bitter, or upset about something? Well, I know someone that’s like that now and then… Me. Every once in a while, a subject matter or person will bring out the bitterness in me. I never have anything good to say about the subject or the person. I realize today that I allowed bitterness to take root in me and when I’m not careful, it (and I) can affect people around me.

God doesn’t want you or I to be bitter. He’s created you to experience His love, joy, and happiness. When you allow bitterness to take root in your life, it has the potential of pulling you away from what Christ has for you to experience. When bitterness takes root, it will start to spill over into your home, workplace, relationships, and even worship. You may start to wonder, “How did I get like this?” It’s not who Christ wants you to be. Some time ago, you may not have forgiven someone when you should have. You didn’t let an issue go when you could have. You allowed bitterness to take root, but you don’t have to any longer. Uproot it today and bind the spirit of bitterness. Dig it out! Forgive that person in your heart today. Release that situation from your spirit right now. Make the decision to let no bitter root grow that can cause trouble and defile many. Including yourself.

Heavenly Father, I will see to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up in me to cause trouble and defile others. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
