Stephen Covey has a book called The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The sixth habit he presents is to Synergize. He writes, “To put it simply, synergy means ‘two heads are better than one.’ Synergize is the habit of creative cooperation… Synergy lets us discover jointly things we are much less likely to discover by ourselves. It is the idea that the whole is greater than the sum of the parts… When people begin to interact together genuinely, and they're open to each other's influence, they begin to gain new insight.”
Likewise, in our churches, there is so much God wants us to discover together, but “I’m mad at her” and “I heard what’s going on in his personal life.” Synergy in our ministries suffers tremendously due to gossip, rumors, and backbiting, when Christ tells us to go to our brother or sister, alone, and address the problem you have. Most issues would easily be taken care of if we did just that instead of isolating believers, publicly placing scarlet letters on them secretly, or talking about what we heard behind their backs. Perhaps then we can get God’s work done instead of the work of the enemy. Following Jesus is about winning people over sin, not losing them to it.
