A Friend to the End

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters.
— 1 John 3:16 (NIV)

How would you describe someone who’s a good friend? Is it the one who loans you money and doesn’t harp about when they’ll get it back? Is it the one you confide in without worrying about it being in a newsfeed on Facebook? What about the one who is always there whenever you need them? These are just a few things we consider when choosing a friend, but perhaps the best indication of a good friend is what we ourselves are willing to do for them.

When you have a good friend, it isn’t always about what they do for you, but what you’re willing to do for them. Jesus loved you so much that He willingly laid His life down for you. God doesn’t want you to kill yourself to show your love for a friend, but to kill your personal agenda to help your spiritual brother or sister. How willing are you to put aside your own needs to meet the needs of another? That, my friend, is being a good friend.

How many of us have them?

Heavenly Father, thank You for showing me through Your Son Jesus how to love my spiritual brother and sister. Empower me with the ability to not consider my personal agenda when someone is in need, but to meet their need with the power You’ve given me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”
— This is my prayer
