Say Something Nice

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
— EPHESIANS 4:29 (NIV)

I’m not on Twitter or Instagram. (I elected not to become a member of either to limit my time in social media forums.) Every once in a while I will read an article that has a link to someone’s Twitter feed or Instagram photo. The comments left in their feed by followers can be so mean, foul, and disgusting.  There is a ninety percent chance the person making these outlandish comments have no personal relationship with the other. They are just spewing hateful, and sometimes, racist, comments just for the sake of doing it.

If You Cant Say.jpg

Scripture says life and death are in the power of your tongue, and Christ wants you, as a believer, to use words that are helpful for building others up according to their needs. Refrain from being critical or participating in gossip and backbiting. If your words aren’t helping, they’re hurting. Scripture also says not to let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouth. So, in other words, you know the old saying, “If you can’t say something nice, then don’t say nothing at all.” Look for opportunities to speak life into people and speak love into the world!

Heavenly Father, please guide my heart and strengthen me to control my tongue. I want to use words that will build people up and not destroy them. I choose to speak life into people and speak love into the world. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
